Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
On Monday, in an emotional ceremony held in North Chicago, officials from Flight for Life honored the North Chicago Fire Department for their exceptional efforts during what is considered the most dramatic rescue of 2015. During the event, local police officers and firefighters were recognized for their incredible work in saving the life of a Chicago woman last fall.
This year’s 22nd annual Scene Call of the Year Award for 2015 was awarded to the firefighting paramedic team led by Cmdr. Joshua Rickabaugh, Cmdr. Joshua Monroe, along with firefighters Danny Roark, Joseph Hernandez, and Joseph Schimanski. Nicole Wood, a Chicago resident, was a passenger in a BMW SUV that collided with a gravel truck on Route 41, just south of Route 137, on September 21st. While the driver escaped serious injury, Wood was severely trapped under the twisted remains of the vehicle.
Rescue teams mentioned that they used nearly all the tools available in their trucks to try and free the critically injured and unconscious woman. To facilitate the arrival of the helicopter, Route 41 was temporarily closed off. "We knew she had multiple injuries, so it was crucial to get her out as fast as possible," explained Rickabaugh. However, due to the complexity of the situation, the entire process took them one hour and 20 minutes—far longer than the usual 20 to 40 minutes.
Chief Dell Urban of the North Chicago Fire Department emphasized the importance of mutual aid and collaboration during this emergency, acknowledging the invaluable support provided by personnel from Naval Station Great Lakes, Knollwood, Libertyville, the North Chicago Police Department, North Chicago Police dispatch, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and Flight For Life.
After the ceremony, Urban described the incident as "the call of a lifetime" and noted that several fire chiefs present remarked they had never encountered anything quite like it in terms of the prolonged extraction process. Among the approximately 1,000 calls Flight for Life handles annually, only a select few are chosen by a panel of judges who assess criteria such as scene safety, decision-making, critical thinking, complex planning, and outstanding performance beyond standard duties.
Thanks, Dan!
