Barrington 2nd & 4th Alarm fire 10-10-12

<

This morning, just as the Barrington Fire Department was wrapping up their shift change, they got a call about a barn on fire on Ridge Road in Barrington Hills. The address was 21089 Ridge Road. When the first responders arrived, they could see some light smoke coming from the direction of the road. They moved cautiously down the private drive with Quint 362, Tanker 362, and Engine 363. Engine 361 had to lay out 1,000 feet of large-diameter hose all the way back to the street because there are no hydrants in this part of Barrington Hills. Two 3,000-gallon portable tanks were set up to ensure a steady water supply. The initial units in the driveway managed to pump out around 3,500 gallons of water before the tanker shuttle system was fully established. Engine 1 also contributed an additional 960 gallons. Not long after the initial response, a MABAS Box Alarm was called in, and it quickly escalated to a second alarm status. Tankers from neighboring areas like Long Grove, Palatine Rural, Round Lake, and Wauconda were dispatched, along with squads from Cary and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods. Trucks were sent from Palatine, Elgin, and Mundelein, while ambulances came from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Deerfield. Engines were also deployed from Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Lake Zurich, Carpentersville, West Dundee, and Hoffman Estates. As the situation worsened, the alarm was further upgraded to a fourth alarm, focusing solely on tanker reinforcements. This brought in additional resources from Fox Lake, Prospect Heights, Bartlett, Nunda Rural, and Crystal Lake. Tim Olk reached the scene shortly after the box alarm was initiated, and Larry Shapiro arrived about half an hour later. Both photographers have captured some compelling images and even a video, which will be shared once they're processed. The barn that was ablaze contained not only hay but also a boat, a forklift, and various mechanical tools. There were also several pieces of equipment and supplies inside. Thankfully, multiple horses were successfully evacuated to a nearby pasture. Unfortunately, one firefighter suffered an ankle injury and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Looking at the Google Maps image of the area, you can get a sense of how isolated the location is, which made the logistics of setting up a water supply particularly challenging. The sheer size of the fire, as seen in Tim Olk's photograph, really shows how intense the situation became. It’s clear that the firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, especially given the lack of local infrastructure to support their efforts.
