2-Alarm fire in Elmhurst, 1-26-17 (part 2)
I just got back from covering a pretty intense two-alarm commercial fire over on 351 North York Road in Elmhurst. It happened earlier today, and I managed to snap some photos that really capture the scale of the situation. The whole area was thick with smoke, making it hard to see much beyond the towering flames licking at the building.
The first photo I took shows an E-One tower ladder hard at work, its massive arm reaching up towards the blaze. It’s such a powerful image, almost surreal how something so destructive can bring out the best in people who rush in to help. Another shot features Carol Stream Fire Chief Robert Hoff standing tall amidst all the chaos. He looked calm but determined, which is exactly what you want in a leader during moments like these.
There’s also this incredible photo of Elmhurst FD Tower 2, looking absolutely massive against the backdrop of smoke and fire. You can tell by the equipment and setup that they’re prepared for anything. Then there’s Stone Park FD Fire Chief Michael Paige in another shot—his expression says it all about the gravity of the situation.
In one of my favorite pictures, you see multiple Elmhurst fire trucks lined up at the scene, their lights flashing against the darkened sky. And if you look closely, there are firefighters battling the flames with what looks like multi-versal tools or hoses—I’m not entirely sure what they’re called but they’re impressive nonetheless.
One particularly striking image captures two tower ladders working in tandem, creating this almost choreographed effort to douse the fire from above. It’s a testament to teamwork under pressure. Finally, there’s this hauntingly beautiful photo showing heavy smoke billowing out from the commercial building, completely engulfing everything around it.
This fire was clearly no small matter, and seeing how everyone came together makes me proud of our local emergency services. These images really tell the story of resilience and bravery in the face of danger.
