2014 Lexus IS 250 AWD Review – Premium, Small Coupe

<

Lexus has long been working toward breaking into the luxury car market by creating strong competitors to BMW. One such effort is the 2014 Lexus IS 250, a premium and sporty coupe designed to rival German luxury vehicles. Recently, I had the opportunity to drive one for a week, and here’s my detailed review.

2014 Lexus IS 250 Review - Premium, Small Coupe

The sleek design of the Lexus IS 250 immediately catches the eye.

The Lexus IS 250 is an all-wheel-drive sedan powered by a compact 2.5-liter V-6 engine with 24 valves, dual overhead cams, direct injection, and variable valve timing. This engine generates 204 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. My test model came equipped with several upgrades including the all-weather package, luxury plus technology package, navigation system with Mark Levinson premium audio, and intuitive parking assist. The MSRP for my version was $47,140, and during my week-long test drive, I achieved an average fuel economy of 23 mpg combined (20 city/27 highway).

The rear design flows seamlessly with the elegant lines of the front and sides.

Exterior Design

Compared to previous iterations, the exterior of the Lexus IS 250 has undergone significant redesigns. The new spoiler adds a sporty touch, while the hood and side accents create a bold yet stylish appearance. This car truly stands out as both sporty and luxurious. The lighting and mirrors further enhance its sophisticated appeal.

The cockpit-like interior perfectly accommodates the driver.

Interior Comfort

Inside, the Lexus IS 250 continues its impressive design with a driver's seat that feels like a cockpit, positioning you comfortably behind the wheel. Everything is easily accessible, and I never felt cramped. The craftsmanship and materials used are top-notch, meeting expectations for a luxury vehicle. My test model included the sunroof, which was a fantastic addition, and the upgraded sound system. The audio quality was exceptional, far surpassing basic options, providing crystal-clear sound that filled the cabin beautifully.

Although I occasionally found it challenging to enter and exit the vehicle, the driving position was always enjoyable. The leather seats were comfortable, and the overall layout felt intuitive.

Driving Experience

On the road, the Lexus IS 250 proved to be a delightful daily driver. While some critics argue that the small V-6 engine may struggle under aggressive cornering, I found it handled turns confidently at high speeds and accelerated smoothly from a standstill. Although it might not excel on the racetrack, it offers ample grip and power for everyday use, making it ideal for getting around town or navigating through inclement weather. The all-wheel-drive system, in particular, makes it a strong contender in snowy climates across the U.S.

While I tested the non-F Sport variant, I didn’t feel that it lacked any essential features. Having driven the F Sport model on other Lexus vehicles, I can say it offers slightly enhanced performance for the average driver. However, the additional cost of $3,500 for the F Sport trim seemed unnecessary given the already impressive capabilities of the standard model.

In summary, the Lexus IS 250 faces stiff competition from brands like Audi, BMW, and Cadillac. Lexus aims to challenge BMW’s dominance with the 3 Series, a benchmark in the luxury segment. Will this car win over buyers from competitors? Time will tell, but its all-wheel-drive capability gives it an edge, especially in regions prone to harsh winters.
