$2 Million Saved Using Elios 2 for Oil Tanker Cargo Inspection

Marine Inspection Services, Ltd helped an oil tanker manager save $2 million by using the Elios 2 to inspect a cargo tank during a time of high demand for oil tankers. This was a rare opportunity where every day the ship was in operation meant significant revenue.

Key Benefits at a Glance

Safety

Instead of sending an inspector into the cargo tank, which requires standing on scaffolding at great heights, the Elios 2 was used to collect visual data. This significantly reduces the risk of injury and exposure to hazardous environments.

ROI

The use of the Elios 2 saved approximately $2 million. Building scaffolding for manual inspection would have cost around $400,000 and taken eight extra days, costing $1.6 million in lost revenue at the rate of $200,000 per day.

Speed

The Elios 2 completed the inspection in just two days, compared to the ten days required for a manual inspection due to the time needed for scaffolding setup and removal.

Introduction

In March 2020, the daily rental cost of an oil tanker skyrocketed from about $25,000 to over $200,000. This was due to a combination of low oil prices and a surge in demand as speculators stored oil on tankers, anticipating future price increases.

This period was one of the most profitable times for oil tankers, making it extremely costly to take a vessel out of service for inspections or repairs. Any delay could mean losing millions in potential revenue.

Customer Needs

As an oil tanker manager, the goal is to keep the vessel in operation as much as possible to maximize income. In March 2020, this was especially critical. A defect was discovered in one of the company's crude oil tankers, requiring a thorough inspection to assess the damage and avoid any environmental or safety risks.

A crack in the cargo tank could grow over time, leading to a potential leak, which would require the ship to be taken out of service for cleaning and repairs—costing up to $500,000 and 10 days of lost revenue. In the worst case, it could also lead to an environmental disaster.

Solution

To avoid the costs and delays of dry docking, the management company hired Marine Inspection Services Ltd, a UK-based inspection firm, to evaluate the damage. The team opted to use the Elios 2, a collision-tolerant drone designed for confined space inspections.

The Elios 2 eliminated the need for scaffolding, reduced risk, and provided high-quality visual data. Marine Inspection Services has been using Elios drones for over four years, and this mission further proved their value.

Results

The Elios 2 quickly confirmed the presence of a crack and assessed its extent. Its directional lighting and distance lock made it easy to evaluate the damage, simulating the view of an inspector with a flashlight.

"The Elios 2’s directional lighting and distance lock are very good for determining the extent of damage when you’re looking at a crack. The lighting simulates an inspector standing there holding a flashlight, providing depth and detail to what is being inspected," said Simon Ruddick, Director at Marine Inspection Services Ltd.

Inspectors used the drone to gather detailed visual data and also checked other areas of the tank based on the ship’s design. They found two additional cracks that could have led to costly repairs and downtime if left undetected.

Conclusion

Before this mission, Marine Inspection Services Ltd already knew the Elios 2 was a valuable tool. However, the success of this high-stakes inspection, where delays would have meant huge financial losses, reinforced its importance.

"For us, Flyability’s indoor drone technology has evolved from an interesting and helpful supplemental tool to an essential part of any inspection we conduct. This mission is just one more example of how crucial the Elios 2 is to our ability to help our clients assess damage and make important decisions about the viability of continued operations," said Simon Ruddick.

Water absorption, vacuuming, and decontamination of car floor mats can effectively prevent the residual moisture and dirt on the soles from sliding between the clutch, brake, and accelerator, avoid safety hazards, and reduce the possibility of contamination and damage to the interior. The thick base material can block chassis noise and tire noise and improve driving comfort. The suede car floor mat can also completely absorb the remaining noise and the echo of the car's audio, etc., and protect the hearing from damage.
