Long Grove structure fire 9-15-11

<

The Long Grove Fire Department received an emergency call this morning regarding a fire at 1889 Checker Road. The house, which had been vacant for some time, had served as a training site for the past two weeks, with eight other fire departments conducting multiple interior drills daily. The training concluded yesterday, and the structure was scheduled to be demolished by the developer on Saturday morning, with local residents invited to witness the event. However, this morning’s incident was not part of the planned training. A neighbor initially thought the fire department might still be in the middle of their exercises and delayed calling the fire department. Once she realized the fire was unattended, she immediately alerted authorities. The Long Grove Fire Department responded swiftly with their full crew, including Tanker 55, as there are no hydrants nearby. Upon arrival, firefighters found a working fire on the north side of the house, where a large stack of wooden pallets had ignited. The first arriving unit reported heavy flames from the pallets, and the garage was already down. Firefighters quickly deployed five lines and brought in 3,000 gallons of water from Tanker 55. As the fire spread, additional units were called in, including engines from Buffalo Grove and Palatine, along with an ambulance from Arlington Heights for medical support. Tanks from Prospect Heights and Fox Lake also arrived to help prevent the structure from being completely destroyed. Despite the intensity of the fire, much of the house was saved. Firefighters worked aggressively to contain the blaze, using foam on smoldering areas to conserve water. The pallet pile remained smoldering for some time, but crews managed to control it effectively. The fire was eventually contained, and the structure is expected to be burned down as planned this Saturday. Photographers Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were on scene, capturing the dramatic moments. Several images show firefighters working under challenging conditions, with units backing down a gravel driveway to position themselves properly. The Fox Lake tanker made two trips to refill its 3,000-gallon tank, highlighting the logistical challenges involved. In addition to the fire response, the article also includes photos from the recent live-fire training that took place at the same location. Over the past two weeks, multiple departments participated in intensive training sessions, including interior fire simulations and victim searches. The final day saw more intense fires, reflecting the progression of the training. These images provide a behind-the-scenes look at how fire departments prepare for real emergencies.
