German machinery manufacturing industry has grown for three consecutive years

In 2005, the German machinery and equipment manufacturing sector experienced a notable rebound, with production rising by 4.4% to reach a total output value of 151 billion euros. This marked the third consecutive year of growth, making it the longest period of expansion since 1990. Out of the 35 sectors within the industry, 18 saw an increase in sales, while 17 remained stable or slightly declined compared to the previous year. The equipment utilization rate stood at 86.7%, reflecting strong operational activity. Export performance was a key driver behind this growth. For the first time, German machinery exports surpassed the 100 billion euro threshold, reaching 107 billion euros in 2005—an increase of 7.7% from 2004’s 97.8 billion. However, there were regional shifts: exports to East Asia and Southeast Asia declined slightly, with shipments to China falling by 1%. Despite this, China still accounted for 50% of Germany’s machinery exports to the region. On the other hand, exports to India surged by nearly 50%, marking a significant rise. As a result, India climbed to the 20th position among Germany’s major machinery export markets, moving up four spots from the previous year. Looking ahead, the German Machinery Manufacturers Association (VDMA) noted positive signs in domestic demand as well. With increased investment activities, the industry anticipated continued momentum. The VDMA forecasted a 2% rise in domestic sales for 2006, following a 12% increase between 2004 and 2006. These trends highlight the resilience and adaptability of the German machinery sector during a period of global economic change.
