Large-scale Centrifugal Compressors Achieve Localization of Large Air Separation Equipment and Go Global

In recent years, the reporter learned from the Industry Development Department of the National Development and Reform Commission that China has made significant breakthroughs in developing major technological equipment with independent intellectual property rights during the "10th Five-Year Plan" period. Notably, China has successfully localized large-scale centrifugal compressors for the "first (set)" of key equipment, achieving a level of competitiveness comparable to multinational corporations. The independently developed 40,000-60,000 air separation units have gained recognition from the petrochemical and metallurgical industries, marking China's position among the top manufacturers globally. Additionally, China has largely mastered the design and manufacturing technology for complete sets of 300,000-ton synthetic ammonia and 520,000-ton urea equipment. These achievements signal a new era in the development of China’s petrochemical equipment industry. As international petrochemical processes advance and domestic production scales up, companies are demanding higher performance, efficiency, safety, and energy-saving standards from their equipment. Guided by national policies, China’s major equipment sector has focused on innovation, shifting from imitation to independent development. This has led to the creation of numerous technologies with independent intellectual property. Key equipment now reduces reliance on imports and even challenges the previous trend of full-scale foreign introduction. According to the China Petroleum and Petrochemical Equipment Industry Association, the domestic production rate for refining equipment exceeds 90%, and the localization rate for ethylene plants is around 70%. Significant progress has been made in critical equipment such as cracking gas, propylene, and ethylene compressors—often referred to as the "hearts" of ethylene crackers. Companies like Shengu Group have successfully supplied large-scale compressor units to major petrochemical projects, proving China’s capability to independently design and manufacture advanced, reliable systems capable of supporting ethylene units of 700,000 tons per year or more. Hydrogenation reactors, known for their complexity and high quality requirements, have also seen domestic advancements. After over two decades of R&D, Chinese companies have developed reactors with capacities up to 1,000 tons, meeting rigorous international standards. Similarly, large-scale air separation equipment has been locally developed and applied in projects such as Sinopec Hubei Chemical Fertilizer and Anqing Petrochemical, with some units reaching 60,000-grade capacity and even securing international orders. During the "10th Five-Year Plan," other breakthroughs included large-scale PTA devices, titanium tube heat exchangers, rotary dryers, loop reactors for polypropylene plants, and polyester reactors. Several major projects are currently under development, including 300,000-ton polypropylene loop reactors and 400,000-ton PVC chlorination reactors. From the "Seventh Five-Year Plan" to the "Tenth Five-Year Plan," over 2,000 major petrochemical equipment have been developed and deployed, saving approximately 5.2 billion yuan in import costs. Despite these achievements, there remains a technological gap compared to foreign counterparts. Challenges include slow alignment with petrochemical technology advancements, limited proprietary software development, lack of standardization, and issues with equipment reliability. Additionally, while general equipment manufacturing faces excess capacity, the production of major equipment still lags behind global leaders. Looking ahead, the "11th Five-Year Plan" is expected to bring a surge in petrochemical construction, with production scales reaching 8–12 million tons/year for refineries, 800,000–1 million tons/year for ethylene plants, and 600,000–1 million tons/year for PTA plants. This will create a market worth 30 billion yuan annually. Zhu Sendi, vice president of the China Federation of Machinery Industry, highlighted that China aims to enter the top three in global equipment manufacturing by 2010 and become a leading supplier by 2020, with 90% of major equipment sourced domestically. Experts like Wang Tingjun emphasize the need for long-term strategic planning, tracking global technological trends, accelerating innovation, and increasing investment to enhance both domestic and international competitiveness.
