Large-scale Centrifugal Compressors Achieve Localization of Large Air Separation Equipment and Go Global

In recent years, the reporter learned from the Industry Development Department of the National Development and Reform Commission that during the "10th Five-Year Plan" period, China has made significant progress in developing major technological equipment with independent intellectual property rights. Notably, China has successfully localized large-scale centrifugal compressors for its first-of-a-kind projects, achieving a level of competitiveness comparable to multinational corporations. The independently developed 40,000–60,000 air separation equipment has gained recognition from both the petrochemical and metallurgical industries, establishing China as one of the top manufacturers globally. Moreover, China has largely mastered the design and manufacturing technology for complete sets of 300,000-ton synthetic ammonia and 520,000-ton urea equipment. These achievements mark a new era in the development of China's petrochemical equipment industry. As international petrochemical technologies advance and domestic demand for large-scale production grows, companies have raised their expectations for the performance, efficiency, safety, and energy-saving capabilities of petrochemical equipment. Guided by national policies, China’s major equipment industry has focused on research and development, shifting from imitation to innovation. This effort has led to the creation of several technologies and equipment with independent intellectual property. Key components now reduce reliance on imports, breaking the historical trend of fully importing petrochemical equipment. According to the China Petroleum and Petrochemical Equipment Industry Association, the domestic production rate of refining equipment has exceeded 90%, while the localization rate for ethylene units is around 70%. Significant breakthroughs have also been achieved in critical equipment such as cracking gas compressors, propylene compressors, and ethylene compressors—often referred to as the "hearts" of ethylene plants. Companies like Shengu Group have provided large-scale compressor units for major ethylene plants, proving China's capability to design and manufacture advanced, reliable equipment capable of supporting units over 700,000 tons per year. Hydrogenation reactors, known for their high quality and complex manufacturing, have also seen domestic progress. After over two decades of R&D, Chinese manufacturers have developed reactors with a capacity of 1,000 tons. Similarly, large-scale air separation equipment has been successfully implemented in projects like the Shandong Hualu Hengsheng Fertilizer Renovation Project, with performance parameters matching those of foreign counterparts. These systems are now being used in Sinopec and Anqing Petrochemical projects, and even exported to Iran. Other breakthroughs include large-scale PTA devices, titanium tube heat exchangers, loop reactors for polypropylene plants, and more. Ongoing developments include 300,000-ton polypropylene loop reactors and 400,000-ton PVC chlorination reactors. From the "Seventh Five-Year Plan" to the "Tenth," China has developed over 2,000 major petrochemical equipment, saving approximately 5.2 billion yuan in import costs. Despite these achievements, there remains a gap between China’s petrochemical equipment and international standards. Challenges include slower development relative to petrochemical technology, limited proprietary software technology, lack of standardization, and issues with equipment reliability. Additionally, there is excess capacity in general equipment but a shortage of expertise in producing major equipment. Looking ahead, the "11th Five-Year Plan" will see a surge in petrochemical construction, with projected capacities reaching 8–12 million tons/year for refineries, 800,000–1 million tons/year for ethylene plants, and 600,000–1 million tons/year for PTA plants. The market for petrochemical equipment is expected to reach 30 billion yuan annually. Zhu Sendi, vice president of the China Federation of Machinery Industry, highlighted the country’s long-term goals: becoming among the top three in global equipment manufacturing by 2010, and becoming a key player in the industry by 2020, with 90% of major equipment sourced domestically. Experts like Wang Tingjun emphasize the need for sustained technological innovation, increased investment in R&D, and a focus on global standards to enhance competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
