Heavy-duty commercial vehicles to achieve "big, fast, special"

On November 5, at the 4th Commercial Vehicle Forum hosted by a major newspaper, Zhang Xiaokai, vice president of the China Machinery Industry Federation, emphasized the importance of strategic development for China’s commercial vehicle industry, especially heavy-duty trucks, within the broader context of national sustainability. He urged companies to stay informed about market conditions, adapt to evolving trends, and restructure their product lines to be "big, fast, and specialized." The concept of "big" refers to heavy-duty vehicles with high carrying capacities that are designed for efficiency and precision. As Zhang explained, these trucks offer better economic returns by maximizing productivity. For example, after nationwide measures were implemented to curb overloading in June, models with 12-ton and 15-ton capacities saw a significant increase in demand and production. This shift reflects how users have come to recognize the value of larger, more efficient trucks. “Users are smart,” he said. “They know how to save money and boost profits.” He also highlighted that the trend is moving toward fewer but more powerful vehicles. “In the past, people used two trucks to do what one could now do,” he noted. “Now, they hope one truck can do the work of two, or even three.” This clearly indicates that large-scale development will shape the future of the trucking industry. The term "fast" refers to maintaining high-speed performance while ensuring reliability. Zhang pointed out that in the past, Chinese trucks were often overloaded and ran slowly, earning them the nickname “many outfits and joggers.” However, modern logistics demands speed and efficiency. “It's not just about having more vehicles; it's about running faster and more reliably,” he said. He used the example of coal storage in cities, where previously large amounts of coal were stockpiled, causing pollution. Now, the focus has shifted to transporting coal directly, reducing the need for storage. This requires vehicles that can operate quickly and without failure. “Specialized” means developing high-tech, application-specific vehicles that meet the unique needs of different industries. Zhang stressed that universal, one-size-fits-all trucks are not as effective as those tailored for specific tasks. He cited Shenzhen CIMC, the world’s largest container company, which uses air suspension and GPS systems in its trucks to enhance performance. “Only by being highly specialized can we truly meet the needs of various sectors,” he said. Zhang also addressed concerns about import regulations on vehicle parts. While some commercial vehicle companies worry about being phased out during industrial restructuring, he clarified that the policy primarily targets car assembly companies. The impact on commercial vehicles is minimal due to lower import taxes. Nevertheless, he encouraged companies to strengthen their own capabilities, improve technological absorption, and enhance competitiveness. Finally, he called for greater attention to agricultural vehicles, emphasizing their importance in rural areas. Although some view their development as merely symbolic, Zhang argued that these vehicles have grown organically due to real demand. He urged the industry to invest more in research and development for rural markets, as they represent a huge, untapped potential. “China’s vast territory and regional disparities mean that rural passenger cars must be tailored to local needs,” he concluded. “Only through focused research and development can we ensure healthy growth and fully meet user demands.”
