Total exports into the top five Foton Motors to accelerate internationalization

"Automotive companies today have no local, national, or even regional boundaries — they operate on a global scale. Only world-class car manufacturers can survive in the future, which is why we must sell globally and become truly international companies," said Wang Jinyu, General Manager of Foton Motor, during an interview in 2008. At that time, Foton was already actively pursuing its internationalization strategy, with models like the Auman ETX, Euro V, and Ouma series being launched in European markets. These vehicles were equipped with Cummins engines and MPV models, marking a significant step toward global recognition. Foton's ambitions extended beyond Asia. By 2007, the company had become the largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in Asia and the second-largest globally, producing over 400,000 units annually. According to the World Brand Lab, Foton Motor's brand value reached 17.538 billion yuan in 2006, with projections indicating it would surpass 20 billion yuan by 2007. This growth reflected not only increased production but also improved overseas marketing capabilities. In 2007, Foton ranked fifth among China's top automotive exporters, selling 30,000 units, behind Chery, Great Wall, Honda China, and Hafei. To further expand its global footprint, Foton planned to establish subsidiaries in Russia and India, aiming to boost local production. The first overseas manufacturing plant was set to open in Russia, where the market was considered one of the most important for Foton. The company had already achieved notable success in Russia, with sales reaching 80 million yuan in the previous year. Additionally, Eastern Europe remained a key export region. Wang Jinyu also highlighted plans to enter the Japanese and South Korean markets. The joint venture engine plant with Cummins, expected to be completed in August, would be the world’s largest, with an annual capacity of 400,000 units. This would enable the production of high-end models like the Ouma Japan, targeting premium markets. Looking ahead, Foton aimed to increase overseas sales to more than 20% of total sales by 2010 and over 30% by 2015. To achieve this, the company continued to collaborate with global leaders such as Bosch, AVL, Eaton, and Lotus. A long-term partnership with Mercedes-Benz was also under discussion, with both parties showing strong interest. Although the collaboration was still in the negotiation phase, Wang Jinyu expressed confidence in its eventual success, believing that a strong alliance could deliver results greater than 1+1=2. Despite the gap in profitability compared to Mercedes-Benz, Wang saw opportunity in the partnership. He emphasized that Foton's commitment to the global high-end market made such collaborations essential for long-term growth and competitiveness.
