Box Alarm fire in Sycamore, 9-5-20
Hey everyone,
Just got this update from Art Zern regarding the latest fire incident in Sycamore. It happened just before midnight on Saturday, September 5th. Engine 1 and Chief 3 were the first to arrive at 660 Hill Street after receiving a General Alarm call for a structure fire. When they got there, they found a two-story duplex engulfed in flames on the C and D sides, spreading rapidly through both floors and even reaching the attic.
Engine 1 quickly deployed a 2 ½†hose to the corner where the fire was most intense, which had originated on the deck and spread via the vinyl siding. Engine 2 arrived shortly after and helped secure a stable water supply while also stretching another line to the second floor to tackle the remaining fire and assist with pulling out damaged walls and ceilings. Luckily, all the occupants had managed to escape before any of the firefighters arrived.
Chief 3 decided to box the fire due to limited availability of additional support units. Both Engine 1 and Engine 2 did a commendable job containing the blaze within about 30 minutes. Dekalb T-1 took charge of the roof operations, while other teams focused on thorough overhauling, checking adjacent units for any possible extensions, and handling Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) duties. Mutual aid from various departments including DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston, Elburn, Malta, Kirkland, Somonauk, Maple Park, and Burlington really made a difference. Special thanks go out to the Sycamore Police Department, Com-ed, and NICOR for their assistance too.
The aftermath left the roof structure severely compromised due to intense heat, while the second floor suffered significant damage from both heat and water. The first floor and basement weren’t spared either, facing smoke and water damage. Preliminary estimates put the total loss at around $150,000, making the building uninhabitable. All residents have been safely relocated.
Currently, the exact cause remains undetermined but is still under investigation. This marks the second such incident in the past week alone, so hopefully, we can get some clarity soon on what’s going on. Kudos to Gold Shift crews for their swift response!
Take care everyone,
