Box Alarm fire in Sycamore, 9-5-20
Saturday night around 11:58 PM, the Sycamore Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 660 Hill Street. Engine 1 and Chief 3 were among the first to arrive on scene, finding a two-story duplex engulfed in flames along the rear portion on the C and D sides. The fire had already spread to both upper levels and the attic, fueled by the vinyl siding along the deck area.
Engine 1 quickly deployed a 2 ½-inch hose line to the corner of the burning section, aiming to control the main body of the fire which had originated on the deck. As Engine 2 arrived shortly after, they assisted with water supply and stretched another line up to the second floor to tackle remaining hotspots and begin pulling down affected walls and ceilings. Thankfully, all residents had safely evacuated before the firefighters arrived.
Due to several mutual aid units being delayed or unavailable, Chief 3 decided to box the fire to prevent further spread. The Dekalb Tower 1 team handled roof operations while other responding agencies focused on overhaul efforts, thoroughly checking for any hidden fire extensions and ensuring the adjacent unit remained unaffected. Special thanks go out to all the neighboring departments who came to assist, including Genoa-Kingston, Elburn, Malta, Kirkland, Somonauk, Maple Park, and Burlington Fire Departments, along with Sycamore PD, ComEd, and NICOR for their support.
The situation was under control within roughly half an hour, but crews stayed on scene for another hour and a half to complete overhaul procedures. Ultimately, there were no injuries sustained by either civilians or firefighters—a true testament to everyone's swift response. However, the damage was significant; the roof structure suffered severe damage from intense heat, the second floor endured substantial heat, smoke, and water damage, and the first floor and basement also experienced smoke and water damage. The total estimated loss stands at approximately $150,000, making the building uninhabitable. All residents have been relocated temporarily.
As of now, the official cause remains undetermined pending further investigation. This marks the second structure fire in the past week for Sycamore, highlighting the importance of vigilance and preparedness in our community. Big shoutout to the Gold Shift crews for another commendable job tonight!
