Cicero Fire Department history – part 1

<

Dear [Recipient's Name], I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share a little bit about my grandfather, Joe Salerno, who just celebrated his 93rd birthday. Growing up, my siblings and I spent a lot of time around the firehouse where he worked as an assistant fire marshal for the Cicero Fire Department. Those were such fond memories—seeing all those trucks and getting to know the firefighters who became like a second family to us. Grandpa started with the Cicero Fire Department back in 1954 and later became an assistant fire marshal in 1977. He was a real hero, saving countless lives—including a baby once, who was dropped into his arms from a burning three-story building. Even though most of the firefighters from his era have since passed on, Grandpa remains the last of his kind. Though he still drives and stays active, he’s growing increasingly quiet since losing his beloved wife last year after 70 years of marriage. Still, his eyes light up whenever he talks about the firefighting days, and I think it’s important to honor his legacy. I’ve been working on putting together some old photos and newspaper clippings featuring Grandpa and the Cicero Fire Department. One particularly memorable moment was showing him your website on Christmas. We traced the stations where he worked and even found pictures of the trucks we used to pose with as kids. It meant so much to him to revisit those times. Unfortunately, the official Cicero fire department archives haven’t responded to our requests to contribute these materials, so I’m reaching out to see if there’s any way we could add them here instead. These photographs aren’t just images; they’re a testament to a life dedicated to service and bravery. I’d love for future generations to see what a remarkable impact Grandpa had on the community. If there’s anything specific you need from me or any way I can help make this happen, please let me know. In the meantime, I’ll keep gathering more photos and stories to share. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you for preserving the history of the Cicero Fire Department. It truly means a lot to our family. Best regards, Bob
