Police and fire in Lincolnshire host charity cook-off

The Daily Herald recently published a story about a heartwarming charity cook-off taking place in Lincolnshire, aimed at supporting a young girl battling cancer. This unique event will see local police officers and firefighters swapping their uniforms for aprons as they come together to raise funds for 6-year-old Ava Lee. Ava, who lives near Lincolnshire, was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia back in February. Her family has been going through an incredibly tough time, and now the community is stepping up to help. The charity cook-off, organized by members of the Lincolnshire Police Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District, will take place on September 27 at the village hall located at 1 Olde Half Day Road. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket for attendees to enjoy. “Firefighters are often known for being great cooks,” said Brian Balinski, one of the event organizers. “We thought this would be a fun way to combine our skills and support a good cause.” Fire Chief Fred Krueger added with a laugh, “We’re confident we’ll win. They’re great eaters, but we’re better cooks.” The event isn’t just about food—it’s about saving a life. Ava needs a bone marrow transplant, but so far, no match has been found among her family members. That’s why the organizers are also using the cook-off to promote a bone marrow donor drive. Testing to become a donor is simple—just a cheek swab—but it can be costly. To help cover these expenses, the event will offer samples of the food, with proceeds going toward registration with the National Marrow Donor Program's Be The Match initiative. Ava, a first-grader at Pritchett Elementary School in Buffalo Grove, was diagnosed after she developed a persistent skin infection. She has been undergoing chemotherapy for seven months, and without a bone marrow match, her doctors are preparing for an umbilical cord blood transplant. “We’re hoping to get around 40 new donors from this event,” Balinski said. “It’s not just about raising money—it’s about giving Ava a fighting chance.” Esther Lee, Ava’s mother, expressed deep gratitude for the support. “We’re honored and humbled by everything the community is doing for us,” she said. This cook-off is more than a competition—it’s a powerful reminder of how people can come together to make a real difference. Whether you're a fan of barbecue or just want to help a child in need, this event is worth attending.
