Police and fire in Lincolnshire host charity cook-off
The *Daily Herald* recently featured a heartwarming story about a unique charity event taking place in Lincolnshire. This weekend, local police officers and firefighters will swap their usual equipment for cooking tools to support a young girl battling cancer.
Members from the Lincolnshire Police Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District are organizing a charity cook-off on September 27 at the village hall located at 1 Olde Half Day Road. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering a variety of mouthwatering barbecue dishes like ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket.
Brian Balinski, a Lincolnshire police officer and one of the event organizers, shared his enthusiasm: “Firefighters are often known for being great cooks, and our department has several officers who really enjoy cooking. We thought this would be a fun way to use our skills for a good cause.â€
Fire Chief Fred Krueger is confident his team will come out on top. “We’re known as great cooks, and they’re known as great eaters,†he joked. “They’re really outmatched.â€
The event supports 6-year-old Ava Lee, who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in February. Living near Lincolnshire, Ava needs a bone marrow transplant to help her body produce healthy blood cells. Unfortunately, no family member matches her, so a donor must come from outside her family.
“Our main goal is to find a bone marrow match for Ava,†Balinski said. “We’ve been working on blood drives for years, but her story has given us the perfect opportunity to do more than we originally planned.â€
Registering as a marrow donor is simple — just a cheek swab — but it can be costly. To help cover these expenses, participants at the cook-off will have the chance to try different dishes while contributing to Ava’s cause.
Ava, a first-grader at Pritchett Elementary School in Buffalo Grove, was diagnosed after a persistent skin infection led her parents to the doctor. She has been undergoing chemotherapy for seven months, and without a bone marrow match, the next step may involve an umbilical cord blood transplant.
Balinski hopes the event will attract around 40 new donors. “We’re hoping this event will touch people’s hearts and encourage them to get involved,†he said.
Esther Lee, Ava’s mother, expressed deep gratitude for the community’s support. “We’re honored and humbled by everything that’s being done for Ava,†she said.
