Historic fire scene photos from 4-15-89

<

This is a message from Jim Skrabel:

I recently started scanning some old 35mm photos of fires I've responded to over the years, and I came across these. They reminded me of a specific incident that stands out in my memory.

This was the River North Art Gallery Fire, which took place at 361 W. Superior Street on April 15, 1989. It was initially reported as a 5-11, and possibly one or two special calls. I remember hearing Aerial Tower 3 box it, so I grabbed my camera and rushed to the scene. At the time, I was living in Cicero, so it took me a while to get downtown. By the time I arrived, the fire had already escalated to a 4-11.

These photos are a great reminder of how quickly things can change at a fire scene. It's always interesting to look back and see what the area looked like before all the changes over the years.
