The Fortress Vertical Lift Gate has been manufactured by TYMETAL for over 25 years and is widely used across North America. This innovative gate system is especially beneficial in areas where there's limited space outside the gate opening for a traditional swing or slide gate to retract without hitting obstacles. Designed as a complete system, the Vertical Lift ensures smooth and precise operation with its heavy W12x53 superstructure, a solid #60 chain drive mechanism, and counterweights. Engineered footings, including rebar cages and anchor bolts, provide stability. Steel counterweights inside vertical columns help balance the gate's weight, reducing motor strain. The gate panel moves on four truck assemblies with sealed, permanently lubricated roller bearings, traveling along a smooth aluminum track. A continuous loop drive system connected to the counterweight in each column guarantees accurate movement. Available in various sizes, the Vertical Lift Gate is ideal for spaces with constraints and is commonly used in high-security environments such as detention facilities, military bases, and in high-traffic areas like airports, ports, and delivery docks. Fortress Vertical Lift Gate System with TYM-VS Operator

Part 1 – General:

1.01 Section Includes:

The work in this section shall include furnishing all labor, materials, equipment, and appliances necessary to complete the installation of the Fortress Vertical Lift Gate(s) required for this project in strict accordance with this specification section and drawings. The Vertical Lift Gate System, including operator and counterbalance weights, shall be specifically designed to complement each other as a system and be provided by a single manufacturer. Components (operator from one source and gate panel and counterbalance from another) assembled at the job site to form a system will not be approved.

1.02 References:

Underwriters Laboratory Gate Operator Requirements (UL 325). ASTM F 2200 Standard Specification for Automated Vehicular Gate Construction. American Welding Society AWS D1.2 and AWS D1.1/D1.1M Structural Welding Code. ASTM A 123 Standard Specification for Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Coatings on Iron and Steel. Operator Model TYM-VS is compliant in usage Classes III and IV.

1.03 Submittals:

Product Data: Provide manufacturer’s catalog cuts with printed specifications and installation instructions. Deliver two copies of operation and maintenance data covering the installed products, including the name, address, and telephone number of the nearest fully equipped service organization. Shop Drawings: Supply Shop Drawings showing the operating system, including details of all major components. Include parts list showing the manufacturer’s names and part numbers for the complete installation. Certifications: Aluminum and steel welders must be certified per section 2.01 D. Gates must comply with ASTM F 2200 and operators must be UL 325 listed.

Part 2 – Products:

2.01 Vertical Lift Gate System Manufacturers:

The Vertical Lift Gate System shall be manufactured by TYMETAL. Approved substitutions must be submitted to the design team for approval prior to the bid date. Gate manufacturer shall certify compliance with ASTM F 2200 and UL 325. Independent certification of welding procedures per AWS D1.2 and AWS D1.1/D1.1M codes is required.

2.02 System Function:

System shall be designed so that gate movement from the closed position is impossible except by electric or mechanical means. The vertical lift gate operator shall achieve a maximum gate speed of 2.2 ft per second with soft-start and soft-stop functions to prevent shock load.

2.03 System Dimensions:

Clear gate opening height and width, gate panel height, and whether it includes an additional foot of barbed wire are specified.

2.04 Operator:

Motor size is 1 HP, variable frequency drive for programmable soft-start and soft-stop, overload protection, self-enclosed gear-head gearbox, #60 roller chain, manual operation with crank handle, integral limit system, 5VDC and UL listed control circuit, audio alarm, main power disconnect switch, transformer, auto close timer, etc.

2.05 Motor Housing:

Water-resistant motor box constructed of 10-gauge sheet steel, detention hinges, tamper-resistant security screws, and a prison dead bolt with three keys provided.

2.06 Safety Cover:

A safety cover of 16-gauge steel houses each of the counterweights.

2.07 Safety Device:

A “claw” type safety device stops the gate in case of cable malfunction. Traffic signal lights (TS-1 Red/Green) are installed on both sides of the gate.

2.08 Vertical Life Gate:

Gate frames made of 6063-T6 aluminum alloy, tracks and trucks with self-aligning assemblies, diagonal bracing with stainless steel cables, gate filler options, and galvanized or powder-coated finishes.

2.09 Structural Steel Columns:

Two W12 x 53 structural steel lifting columns with anchor bolts and concrete footings.

2.10 Anchor Bolts:

Each anchor bolt assembly consists of four 1 ½” diameter bolts and tie rods conforming to ASTM A-36 grade steel.

2.11 Cable and Bearings:

Galvanized steel cables attached to counterweights, passing over sheaves and supported by pillow block bearings.

2.12 Controls for Electrically Operated Vertical Lift Gates (UL Class III or IV):

Select and specify access control devices compatible with most industry Accessories.

2.13 Warranty:

The vertical lift gate and operator system is warranted against manufacturing defects for three years from the date of sale.

Part 3 – Execution:

3.01 Site Inspection:

Final upgrades and installation conditions shall be examined. Work shall not begin until all unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

3.02 Installation:

Equipment shall be installed in strict accordance with company instructions unless otherwise shown on contact drawings. The complete system shall be adjusted to ensure proper performance. The gate system must comply with ASTM F 2200 and UL 325. Appropriate external primary entrapment safety devices must be installed and verified.

3.03 System Validation:

The complete system shall be adjusted to assure proper performance. The system shall be operated for a sufficient period to determine it is in proper working order. The Owner’s Representative shall be notified three working days prior to the test. Each system function shall be tested step-by-step. All equipment necessary for adjustment and testing shall be supplied. Safety features shall be tested and explained, and warning signs must be installed in prominent positions.
