2019 Sustainability Report: Working With Our Customers and Partners to Achieve Sustainable Outcomes in the Decade Ahead

<

The world is changing at an unprecedented pace. Climate change and inequality are no longer distant threats—they’re daily realities that shape our lives and the future of our planet. The global pandemic has left a lasting impact, disrupting economies and exposing vulnerabilities in our systems. Meanwhile, social unrest continues to highlight deep-seated issues like racial injustice and structural inequality that still plague many societies.

As we step into this new decade, it’s more important than ever to reaffirm our commitment to building a sustainable, resilient, and equitable future for all. In our annual Sustainability Report, CEO Andrew Anagnost reflects on the challenges we face—global health crises, climate change, rising inequality, and political instability—and emphasizes the need for stronger leadership and preparedness. “While few of us could have predicted the shutdown of the global economy due to the novel coronavirus, it’s clear we could and should have been better prepared,” he writes. “This moment has served as a wake-up call for leaders everywhere.” This year’s report looks back on over a decade of progress in sustainability and outlines our vision for supporting customers in their own journey toward a greener future.

Being a Partner on Climate Action

In 2019, we achieved the science-based greenhouse gas reduction target we set over a decade ago. Our carbon footprint has shrunk by 43% thanks to energy efficiency improvements, powering our offices and cloud services with 100% renewable energy, and purchasing Gold Standard carbon offsets for business travel and major conferences. We’ve also committed to becoming fully climate neutral starting in fiscal year 2021. This effort not only strengthens our own sustainability goals but also equips us to better support our customers in achieving theirs. To encourage bolder climate action, we recently shared our technologies and customer stories with policymakers at COP25, the UN Climate Change Conference. We believe that strong policy frameworks are essential for driving innovation and helping businesses transition to a low-carbon economy.

Diversity, Community, and Belonging

We are deeply committed to advancing racial justice and equality. Building a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace is an ongoing journey, and we’re making progress every day. This spring, our CEO announced that every Autodesk employee would become a company owner through newly issued stock grants. We’re also aiming to contribute 1% of our operating margin to the Autodesk Foundation, which supports entrepreneurs and innovators working to create positive change in underserved communities.

Partnering with Customers to Lead

While we’re proud of our own achievements, our greatest impact lies in helping our customers reach their sustainability goals. Tools like Revit and Fusion 360 empower our clients to design more efficiently, use resources more wisely, and build products and infrastructure that can withstand future uncertainties.

Learn more about customer and partner success highlighted in this year’s Sustainability Report:

  • EC3: We continue to invest in collaborative innovation, working with customers to develop the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3), now integrated with BIM 360. These tools help reveal hidden environmental impacts in construction materials, accelerating the shift to a low-carbon industry.
  • BLOX: This family-owned firm in Birmingham, Alabama, used BIM 360 to double efficiency and quality, allowing them to grow into a national leader in hospital construction.
  • (D/P/S): Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, based in New Mexico, saved a client $2.5 million over 30 years using net-zero building solutions designed with Autodesk Revit and Insight.
  • Honda: The Japanese automaker used generative design and 3D printing to create a crankshaft that was 50% lighter, improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.
  • Rebound Technologies: This Denver-based company developed a groundbreaking cooling solution that could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 681 million metric tons annually by 2050. Their technology, built with Fusion 360, improves frozen food production by 20%, lowers costs, and uses less electricity.
Creating a sustainable and inclusive economy is a complex, long-term challenge. It won’t happen overnight, and each customer faces unique obstacles. But our goal is to move forward together, empowering our clients to lead the way in designing a better, more resilient, and equitable future for everyone.
