Chicago Still & Box Alarm 8-19-11
Dan McInerney captured the Still and Box Alarm on Sheridan Road yesterday and shared several photos from the scene, along with his detailed account:
"At around 2:45 PM on Friday, the 9th Battalion received a still alarm for a fire at 5757 N. Sheridan (later corrected to 5747 N. Sheridan). The Fire Alarm Officer initially classified it as a working fire but later upgraded it to a still in a high-rise. As the 9th Battalion approached the corner of Sheridan from Hollywood, they requested a still and box alarm. Upon arrival, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the third floor of a three-story townhome measuring 75x125 feet. The building directly exposed a 30-story high-rise to the south.
Engine 70 deployed their leader line and quickly made progress in controlling the fire, while Truck 47 positioned themselves from a parking lot to the south and ladder the roof. The still in the high-rise response was held back to ensure that the stairwells of the high-rise remained unaffected and to prevent the building from becoming an exposure. The staging area was set up at Hollywood and Sheridan, which is the northern exit for Lake Shore Drive. This caused significant traffic congestion on LSD during a Friday afternoon, especially as the air show was winding down."
