Paris recently celebrated a major milestone in its urban transformation as Gustafson Porter + Bowman was officially announced as the winner of the competition to redevelop the iconic Eiffel Tower’s “grand site.†The announcement took place at an event held in Paris’ City Hall, where Mayor Anne Hidalgo, along with Deputy Mayors Jean-Louis Missika and Jean-François Martins, revealed the winning design that will shape the future of one of the city's most beloved public spaces. The “grand site†stretches across 2.4 kilometers, encompassing the Eiffel Tower, the Champ de Mars, and the Trocadéro Gardens—each a symbol of Parisian culture and history. Last year, Autodesk partnered with the City of Paris to create a detailed 3D model of the entire area using building information modeling (BIM). This groundbreaking project, developed in collaboration with WSP and Gexpertise, covered 2.4 square kilometers and included everything from buildings and roads to green spaces and pedestrian zones. The model was unveiled in May 2018, setting the stage for a competitive design process involving four teams, including Gustafson Porter + Bowman and BIM Services, AL_A and Quatorze-ig, Agence ter and Arcadis, and KOZ Architectes. Throughout the year, Autodesk provided each team with access to a simplified version of the 3D model via Autodesk Infraworks, helping them visualize their proposals and refine their designs. Workshops were also organized to support internal collaboration and deepen the teams' understanding of the existing site conditions. This digital approach not only enhanced efficiency but also allowed for more accurate planning and decision-making throughout the process. "Autodesk is proud to have supported the City of Paris and the four finalist teams over the past year in this ambitious and innovative project," said Nicolas Mangon, VP Business & Marketing AEC at Autodesk. "By leveraging intelligent digital models, immersive 3D visualization, and collaborative workflows, we helped accelerate decision-making and reduce potential errors. The jury was able to experience the proposed designs in a virtual environment, gaining a deeper understanding of how these changes would affect the visitor experience. We commend the City of Paris for embracing this digital transformation and the winning team for demonstrating the future of architecture and construction." The final designs were presented today through immersive 3D experiences, allowing the public and the jury to explore the proposals in a dynamic and interactive way. This approach not only enhances clarity and collaboration but also gives citizens a chance to engage with the future of their city. The models played a crucial role in the judging process, enabling the panel to evaluate the proposals in a shared format and simulate what the site might look like once the renovations are complete. The revitalization of the Eiffel Tower area is set to be completed in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics and other major events such as the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Beyond aesthetics, the project aims to tackle pressing urban challenges, including energy efficiency, sustainability, mobility, logistics, waste management, and flood resilience. It represents a bold step toward creating a more livable and sustainable Paris for future generations. Now that the winning design has been revealed, the public is invited to provide feedback during a one-month exhibition at the Pavillon de l’Arsenal. The winning team will review the input and make necessary adjustments before finalizing the plan. Once approved, the project will move forward with the goal of securing a building permit by early 2020, paving the way for the long-awaited transformation of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.
