Corporate Perspective: "Five hundred" or "Five Hundred"

The 2005 list of the Top 500 Chinese Enterprises was officially released, highlighting a group of massive corporations. However, the question remains: how many of these companies are truly "strong"? According to an accompanying analysis report, China's top 500 companies collectively generated only 8.4% of the revenue of the world’s top 500 companies. For instance, Sinopec, the leading company on the list, had revenues that were far below those of Walmart, which ranked first in the U.S. top 500. In terms of independent intellectual property and core technologies—key indicators of corporate strength—the gap is even more pronounced. Only 106 of the top 500 Chinese companies spent over 2% of their sales revenue on R&D, revealing a significant lack of innovation and technical capability. It is well known that strong companies are defined by their core competitiveness, profitability, and operational efficiency. Large companies, on the other hand, are measured by size, assets, turnover, and market share. These are fundamentally different concepts. Just as a large head doesn’t necessarily mean a healthy or powerful person, being big doesn’t equate to being strong. In China’s current development environment, it is relatively easy to grow a company through economic or administrative means. Merging multiple firms into one is not uncommon. However, building a truly strong company requires long-term effort and sustainable growth. There is no data available on how many of this year’s top 500 companies are loss-making or have seen declining profits, despite the inclusion of efficiency metrics in the evaluation. This raises concerns about the true quality of these enterprises. The author suggests that renaming the lists from "Top 500 Chinese Enterprises" to "Largest Chinese Enterprises" might be more accurate. Doing so could help avoid confusion between large and strong companies, reducing the tendency for more people, places, and companies to label themselves as "strong" simply because they are big.
