Increased risk of traditional fossil energy use

The National Petroleum Council recently released a report titled *Facts* during the OPEC summit, offering insights into the global energy landscape through 2030 and outlining strategies to address future challenges. The report highlights several key points that will shape energy policy and development in the coming decades. First, it emphasizes that fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas—will remain essential energy sources for the next two decades. Second, while energy resources won’t run out, the extraction of oil and gas will continue, and the increasing reliance on natural gas brings new risks, such as environmental and geopolitical concerns. Third, to mitigate these risks, the world must diversify its energy mix. This includes expanding coal, nuclear power, renewables, and unconventional oil and gas. However, each of these options comes with its own set of challenges—environmental, political, economic, and infrastructural. Developing these energy sources requires not only innovation but also significant investment in infrastructure and transportation networks. Fourth, the report warns against overemphasizing "energy independence" or "enhanced energy security." It argues that true energy independence is still a distant goal, especially given the interconnected nature of today’s global energy markets. Fifth, a major challenge lies in the aging workforce within the U.S. energy sector, with many scientists, engineers, and industry professionals expected to retire within the next decade. Finally, policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions will reshape the energy mix, driving up costs for certain industries while also pushing for slower demand growth. In response, the National Petroleum Council recommends boosting energy efficiency across transportation, residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. It also calls for expanding clean coal technologies, nuclear power, biofuels, and other renewable sources. Additionally, the council suggests strengthening international cooperation, engaging with major energy producers and consumers, and investing in long-term research and development. It further advocates for robust legal frameworks to support carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, helping establish a global system for managing carbon emissions effectively.
