At present, China's gear industry faces a significant shortage of testing equipment and instruments, which leads to a lack of reliable data for assessing the quality of over 20 million gearboxes produced annually. This gap in testing infrastructure hinders the ability to ensure consistent product quality and technological advancement within the sector. To fundamentally improve the internal quality of China’s gear industry, it is crucial to invest in and develop advanced testing instruments and equipment.
Currently, there are approximately 300 gear manufacturing facilities in China that have basic metrology rooms equipped with fundamental measuring tools. However, the total number of coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) is less than 200, and most of them are imported from abroad. The industry also has more than 1,000 types of gear measuring instruments, including mechanical, optical, and CNC-based systems, along with over 30 dedicated gear measurement centers. These instruments are mainly manufactured by global leaders such as MAAG, Klingelnberg, Hofler, Carl Mahr, M&M, and Taylor Hobson. Companies like Carl Mahr, Zeiss, SIP, and others offer a wide range of precision instruments, including roundness meters, length gauges, optical indexing heads, roughness meters, projectors, and Wangong devices. In contrast, many smaller manufacturers lack even basic measuring tools, with some having only general-purpose equipment.
In terms of assembly testing, there are only around 10 sets of gear assembly test instruments and worm gear testers available nationwide. Gearbox test benches and drive axle test stands are even scarcer, with no more than 50 units in total. Many factories do not possess essential tools such as noise meters or torsional vibration analyzers. Given the high standards required in gear manufacturing, where every component and assembly must be rigorously tested, the absence of modern measuring technology significantly limits quality control and process optimization.
In any machinery factory—whether gears are produced in-house or sourced externally—it is essential to have proper gear, thread, and spline measuring instruments. Without these, quality cannot be effectively monitored or maintained, leading to potential defects and reduced performance. Strengthening the development and adoption of advanced measurement technologies is therefore a critical step toward enhancing the competitiveness and reliability of China's gear industry.
