Gearbox quality lacks data measurement instrument to be developed

At present, China's gear industry suffers from a severe lack of testing equipment and instruments, which leads to insufficient reliable data for assessing the quality of over 20 million gearboxes produced annually. To fundamentally improve the internal quality of China's gear manufacturing, it is essential to focus on and enhance the development of advanced testing instruments and equipment. Currently, there are approximately 300 gear production factories in China that have basic metrology rooms with fundamental measuring tools. However, the total number of coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) is less than 200, and most of them are imported from abroad. There are more than 1,000 types of gear measurement instruments, including mechanical, optical, and CNC-based systems, with over 30 gear measuring centers. These devices are primarily manufactured by international brands such as MAAG, Klingelnberg, Hofler, Carl Mahr, M&M, and Taylor Hobson. Companies like Carl Mahr, Zeiss, SIP, and Wangong offer a wide range of precision instruments, including roundness meters, length gauges, optical indexing heads, roughness meters, projectors, and other high-accuracy tools. However, the remaining 200 or so gear manufacturers rarely possess any advanced measuring equipment, with some factories having only general-purpose tools and no specialized instrumentation at all. In terms of assembly testing, there are only about 10 sets of gear assembly test instruments and worm gear testers available nationwide, and no more than 50 sets of gearbox test benches and drive axle test stands. Many factories lack essential tools such as noise meters and torsional vibration analyzers. In the gear manufacturing process, ensuring the quality of parts, components, and final assemblies requires rigorous testing and control, making advanced and practical measurement techniques and instruments indispensable. Whether gear transmission components are produced internally or purchased externally, every machinery factory must be equipped with instruments for measuring gears, threads, and splines. Without these tools, quality control becomes nearly impossible, and the overall performance and reliability of the final products cannot be guaranteed. This highlights the urgent need for investment in domestic measurement technology and infrastructure to support the growth and competitiveness of China's gear industry.
