Working fire in Belvidere, 9-2-20

The Belvidere Fire Department responded to a reported smoke incident at the 600 block of W. Locust Street on Wednesday morning, September 2, 2020, at 10:36 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find light smoke coming from the rear of a three-story multi-family apartment building as residents were being evacuated.

Upon investigation, the fire was discovered and successfully extinguished in a second-floor apartment within the 16-unit complex. The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental, resulting in an estimated $20,000 in property damage. The building, valued at $950,000, sustained structural damage from the incident.

Multiple fire departments and emergency response units assisted in the operation, including Boone County Fire Districts #2 and #3, Cherry Valley Fire, Marengo Fire, Boone County EMA, OSF Lifeline, and the Capron Rescue Squad. Local residents were advised to remain cautious and keep windows closed during the cleanup process.
