3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 1)
On Wednesday evening, March 4, 2015, around 8:00 PM, Rolling Meadows fire crews were dispatched to 5201 Carriageway Drive after reports of a fire in a third-floor apartment. As they approached the scene, they were informed that a sofa was on fire, with flames already spreading up the wall. Battalion 15 escalated the alarm to a Code 4, indicating a working fire. Police who arrived first reported seeing flames bursting from a third-floor window, followed by a shocking discovery — a resident had jumped from a balcony on the same floor.
The alarm was then upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm as the situation worsened. According to reports, police officers were performing CPR on the injured individual when firefighters arrived. The Chicago Tribune later confirmed that the victim had died as a result of the fire.
Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote of Rolling Meadows stated that the person, whose age and gender were not immediately released, had jumped from the third-floor balcony of the apartment building. The individual was pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. By approximately 10:00 PM, the fire was considered "contained," but firefighters were still on-site working to fully extinguish it. The first and second floors had been evacuated, and crews were conducting a final check of the third floor.
The incident escalated further, with the alarm being upgraded to a second alarm, then a third, before being officially canceled just before midnight. Multiple emergency units responded to the scene, and several media outlets captured the event. A series of posts will follow, featuring photos and videos from the fire.
As an interesting side note, this building is located directly across the street from another structure in the same complex that had previously experienced a three-alarm fire several years prior.
