3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 1)

<

On Wednesday evening, March 4, 2015, around 8 p.m., Rolling Meadows fire crews were dispatched to 5201 Carriageway Drive after reports of a fire in a third-floor apartment. As they approached, they were informed that a sofa was on fire and flames were already spreading up the wall. Battalion 15 escalated the alarm to a Code 4, indicating a working fire. Police who arrived on scene reported seeing flames bursting from a third-floor window, followed by a resident jumping from a balcony. The incident was then upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm. According to the Chicago Tribune, police were performing CPR on the victim when firefighters arrived. Rolling Meadows Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote confirmed that the individual, whose age and gender were not immediately released, had jumped from a third-floor balcony. The person later died at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. By 10 p.m., the fire was considered "contained," but firefighters were still working to fully extinguish it. The first and second floors of the building had been evacuated, and crews were conducting a final sweep of the third floor. The alarm was later upgraded to a second and then a third alarm before being called off just before midnight. Multiple emergency units responded to the scene, and several photos and videos will be shared in upcoming posts. It's worth noting that this building is located directly across the street from another structure in the same complex that previously experienced a three-alarm fire several years ago.
