Skokie responds to man trapped under a car

On August 30, 2011, at around 3:00 PM, Jeff Rudolph captured a series of images from an incident in Skokie that involved a man trapped under his vehicle on the 7700 block of Kilbourn. He shared the following account: "A call came in reporting a child stuck under a car. Skokie Fire Department responded with a full extrication team, including two engines, a ladder truck, a squad, an ambulance, and a battalion chief. Upon arrival, Engine 16 discovered it wasn’t a child, but rather an adult male who was slightly intoxicated. He had jacked up one side of his car to work on the exhaust system and ended up wedged underneath. His friend, also under the influence, tried to assist but only made the situation worse. When Squad 18 arrived, they secured the vehicle and used airbags to lift it off the man. He managed to slide out with only minor abrasions and declined medical transport. The exhaust still needed repair, but the man was otherwise unharmed. The response showcased the quick thinking and skill of the firefighters, who handled the situation with care and efficiency." Jeff has provided several photos capturing key moments of the rescue. The first image shows firefighters arriving at the scene, while others depict the use of airbags to lift the car and the man being freed. One photo highlights the tower ladder unit, and another shows the battalion chief on-site. The final image shows the man walking away after being rescued, clearly unharmed and refusing further assistance. These photos give a real-time look at how emergency responders handle unexpected situations, even when the initial report turns out to be misleading. It's a reminder of the importance of careful assessment and teamwork in the field.
