Introduction to horizontal converter

Horizontal Converter is a metallurgical furnace, mainly for the production of non-ferrous metallurgy processed matte (metal sulfides). It is characterized by the absence of fuel and relies on the oxidation of iron and sulfur in copper water to release heat to provide full heat. The matte is blown to produce blister copper with a copper grade above 98%.

A cylindrical horizontal rotary self-heating converting furnace for smelting copper, nickel and the like. In 1880, the Frenchman P. Manhes and David used a converter to blow the matte and get thick copper. In 1883, Mane and Davyd built the first horizontal side-blown converter, which became the prototype of a modern copper-making converter. At that time, the converter was lined with a silicon refractory material, and when the matte was blown (see 锍), the SiO2 required for slag formation was supplied by the fused lining, so that the lining life was short. 1909, Pierce (WHPeirce) and Smith (EACSmith) using magnesium brick lined horizontal blowing converter matte, to succeed, the required flux is supplied from quartz SiO2 slag plus improve the lining life. Later, the converter was further promoted to blow low ice nickel to produce high ice nickel. The horizontal side-blow converters, which are commonly used in modern times, are still named after the names of Pierce and Smith, called PS converters.

The inner diameter of the modern large-scale horizontal converter is about 4 meters and the length is about 9 meters. The outer casing is 4-5 cm thick steel plate, the inner lining is magnesia brick, magnesia chrome brick or chrome magnesia brick; the middle part of the furnace body is provided with a furnace mouth for feeding, exhausting smoke, discharging slag and copper; some converters are in the furnace The body end wall is provided with a quartz gun to which quartz flux is added, but most of them are added with quartz from the furnace mouth; a row of eye eyes is arranged horizontally on the side of the furnace body for bubbling compressed air. The whole furnace body frame is on the support roller, and the driving device rotates in the forward and reverse directions around the horizontal axis, so that the furnace mouth is turned to a position suitable for feeding, blowing, slag discharging and copper discharging.
