Studios Power Top Academy Awards Film Contenders with Autodesk Software
Award season is here again, and once more, the best films of the year are being celebrated at prestigious events like the Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Annies, and the Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards.
From epic space adventures to heartwarming wildlife tales, Autodesk tools have been instrumental in helping global teams create stunning visual effects and animations for some of the year’s most acclaimed films. This marks the 25th consecutive year that our Media & Entertainment solutions have played a key role in Oscar-nominated films in the VFX and animation categories.
Some of the top studios behind these award-winning projects include Animal Logic, Cinesite, Company 3, Digital Domain, DreamWorks Animation, Framestore, ILM, LAIKA, Method Studios, MPC, Sony Pictures Imageworks, SPA Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Weta Digital, and many more.
LAIKA’s work on “Missing Link†was nothing short of extraordinary. They developed a groundbreaking workflow combining CGI and 3D printing to achieve their signature handcrafted stop-motion aesthetic.
Brian McLean, director of Rapid Prototyping at LAIKA, shared how complex the process was: “For ‘Missing Link,’ facial performances were created in Maya, exported as OBJ files, then voxelized and sliced using Cuttlefish from Fraunhofer IGD. These were sent to a Stratasys color 3D printer. Over 106,000 unique faces were printed for the film—sometimes 24 different expressions were needed per second. Lionel alone had over 39,000, and Link had 27,000.â€
Managing all these assets required precise organization. “We used Shotgun Software to track shot assignments, schedules, plate information, and reference materials for every production since ‘ParaNorman,’†said Steve Emerson, visual effects supervisor at LAIKA.
Their innovative approach paid off. “Missing Link†won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, as well as Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature and Outstanding Character in an Animated Feature at the VES Awards.
This is just one example of how our customers continue to push the boundaries of creativity and technology. To everyone who contributed to this year’s unforgettable films—congratulations! We can’t wait to see what you’ll do next in 2020.
