Open House for MABAS (update)

<

A few photos from the MABAS Home Day Open House held last week at the readiness center warehouse in Wheeling. The event provided a great opportunity for local fire chiefs, emergency responders, and community members to learn more about the critical work being done at the facility. The first image shows a crowd of officials gathered during the open house, where several presenters shared insights on various topics related to emergency management and preparedness. This was a chance for leaders from across the region to come together and discuss important issues affecting their communities. Congressman Peter Roskam also attended the event and addressed the fire service personnel, highlighting the importance of collaboration and support for first responders. His presence underscored the significance of the MABAS readiness center in the broader emergency response network. Another photo showcases the Mobile Field Office, a unique unit designed to expand interior working space with its slide-out sides. This is one of three such units, specifically designated as MSU-North for the northern region. These mobile units play a crucial role in supporting emergency operations by providing flexible and adaptable spaces. A sign near the unit explains its purpose and function, offering visitors a clear understanding of how these specialized resources contribute to disaster response efforts. One of the most impressive additions to the MABAS fleet is this 8×8 Oshkosh P-15, which was surplus from the Air Force. It’s one of the largest crash trucks ever built, carrying 6,000 gallons of water and 600 gallons of AFFF. With two 1,500-GPM pumps and two turrets rated at 1,250-GPM each, it's a powerful tool—though it's not yet in active service, and its future role is still being determined. The warehouse also houses Illinois Task Force 1 (ILTF-1), the state’s Urban Search and Rescue team. As part of MABAS-IL, IL-US&R TF-1 is a vital asset for emergency response efforts throughout the state. One side of the facility is dedicated to storing and maintaining the equipment needed for search and rescue missions. Among the latest additions to the US&R team’s mobile equipment is this flatbed roll-off for lumber, helping to support rescue operations by providing essential materials when needed. Overall, the open house was a valuable opportunity for the public to see firsthand the important work being done at the MABAS readiness center, and for officials to engage with the community in a meaningful way.
