The color of fire trucks

<

The Wall Street Journal recently published an article that delves into a long-standing discussion within the fire service: the color of emergency vehicles. The piece highlights a small Florida district that has taken a different approach by using a non-traditional color for its fire apparatus. In most parts of the country, red remains the standard for emergency vehicles—often referred to as "fire-engine red" due to its visibility and symbolism. However, for almost 40 years, firefighters in Palm Beach Gardens have chosen a striking yellow-green hue. They believe this color is more visible, especially during the heavy rains and poor visibility typical of South Florida summers. Fire Chief Pete Bergel frequently points to a compelling statistic: over his 30-year career with the department, no fire vehicle has ever been rear-ended. “The color is in your face,” he says, emphasizing how it stands out on the road. This unique choice has sparked interest not just locally, but also among other departments considering changes to their fleet colors. While red remains dominant, several local fire departments across different divisions have shifted from white, yellow, or lime green to red or red-based two-tone schemes. These include areas like Elk Grove Township (Division 1), Pingree-Grove and Rutland-Dundee (Division 2), Glencoe (Division 3), Fox Lake and Winthrop Harbor (Division 4), Clarendon Hills (Division 10), Fox River & Countryside (Division 13), Coal City (Division 15), Lisle-Woodridge (Division 16), Elwood (Division 19), and Crete (Division 27). The debate over color isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about safety, visibility, and public perception. As more departments evaluate their equipment, the question remains: is tradition worth keeping, or should innovation take the lead? The full Wall Street Journal article can be found HERE.
