The color of fire trucks
The Wall Street Journal recently covered an interesting topic that has long sparked debate within the fire service: the color of emergency vehicles. The article highlights a small district in Florida that has taken a unique approach by using a non-traditional color for its fire apparatus.
In most parts of the country, red remains the standard for emergency vehicles—often referred to as "fire-engine red" due to its visibility and symbolism. However, for almost 40 years, firefighters in Palm Beach Gardens have chosen a bold yellow-green hue. They claim this color is more noticeable, especially during the heavy rains and thick fog common in South Florida summers. Fire Chief Pete Bergel frequently points to a compelling statistic: over his 30-year career with the department, no fire vehicle has ever been rear-ended. “The color is in your face,†he says, emphasizing how it stands out on the road.
Other local fire departments across different divisions also deviate from the traditional red. These include Elk Grove Township in Division 1, Pingree-Grove and Rutland-Dundee in Division 2, Glencoe in Division 3, Fox Lake and Winthrop Harbor in Division 4, Clarendon Hills in Division 10, Fox River & Countryside in Division 13, Coal City in Division 15, Lisle-Woodridge in Division 16, Elwood in Division 19, and Crete in Division 27. While some of these departments once used white, yellow, or lime green, many have since transitioned to red or a red two-tone scheme.
This ongoing discussion about color reflects not just aesthetic preferences but also practical concerns about visibility and safety. As technology and traffic patterns evolve, so too do the choices made by fire departments across the country. The full Wall Street Journal article can be found HERE.
