These studios relied on software like Maya, Arnold, Shotgun, and Flame to craft the stunning visuals seen in this year’s Oscar nominees, including “1917,†“Avengers: Endgame,†“The Irishman,†“The Lion King,†and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.†The same tools were also used by many of the animated film nominees, such as “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,†“Klaus,†“Missing Link,†and “Toy Story 4.â€

Studios Power Top Academy Awards Film Contenders with Autodesk Software
Award season is here once again, as the best films of the year are being celebrated at prestigious events like the Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Annies, and the Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards. This time, the spotlight shines on incredible storytelling, breathtaking visuals, and the teams behind them.
From epic space adventures to stunning wildlife sequences, Autodesk tools have been instrumental in helping studios around the world create some of the most visually stunning films of the year. For the 25th consecutive year, our Media & Entertainment solutions have played a key role in shaping the visual effects and animation that earn Academy Award nominations.
Some of the top studios recognized this year include Animal Logic, Cinesite, Company 3, Digital Domain, DreamWorks Animation, Framestore, ILM, LAIKA, Method Studios, MPC, Sony Pictures Imageworks, SPA Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Weta Digital.
LAIKA developed a groundbreaking workflow that combined CGI with 3D printing to achieve their signature handcrafted stop-motion aesthetic. Brian McLean, director of Rapid Prototyping at LAIKA, shared the details: “For ‘Missing Link,’ characters’ facial performances were created in Maya, exported as OBJ files, and then processed through a voxelization and slicing workflow using Cuttlefish from Fraunhofer IGD. These were then printed on a Stratasys color 3D printer. Over 106,000 unique faces were produced for the film—some scenes required up to 24 different expressions per second!â€
Managing all these assets was no small task. Steve Emerson, visual effects supervisor at LAIKA, added: “We used Shotgun Software to organize shot assignments, schedules, plates, and reference materials across the entire production. It has been a vital part of our workflow since ‘ParaNorman.’â€
Their efforts didn’t go unnoticed. “Missing Link†won Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes and received multiple VES Awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature and Outstanding Character in an Animated Feature.
This is just one example of how our customers are using Autodesk tools to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation. To everyone who contributed to the films of 2019, congratulations on your incredible work. We can't wait to see what you’ll create next!
