Park Ridge Box Alarm 8-4-12
On Saturday afternoon, severe storms swept through the city and its suburbs, keeping numerous fire departments occupied. Around 5 p.m., units from Park Ridge and North Maine were responding to a storm-related call when they received a report of smoke coming from a house adjacent to another with a gas leak. North Maine Engine 1 arrived first at 110 N. Home Avenue and reported visible smoke from two sides of a large, modern two-story home. Shortly after the initial response, the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 due to the active fire.
A series of images captured by Larry Shapiro show firefighters working on the roof, performing vertical ventilation, and battling the flames. The scene quickly grew in complexity as more units arrived, including Park Ridge’s engine, tower, two ambulances, and battalion chief, along with Niles Ambulance 3 and North Maine Engine 1. As the situation escalated, additional resources were called in, such as Niles Truck 2, DesPlaines Engine 62, Glenview Engine 7, Lincolnwood Ambulance 15, and Tower 158 from Rosemont, as well as Morton Grove Squad 4.
Inside the home, crews found clear conditions on the second floor until they opened the scuttle to the attic, where they encountered heavy smoke, high heat, and active fire. The attic had a finished plywood floor, which made access difficult from certain rooms on the second level. Two lines were deployed inside, and multiple vent holes were cut in the roof. Due to the high humidity and extensive interior work, the incident was upgraded to a Box Alarm, bringing in engines from River Grove, Norwood Park, and Wheeling, a tower from Mt. Prospect, a squad from Skokie, an ambulance from Buffalo Grove, and Des Plaines Battalion 9.
The fire was brought under control around 6:30 p.m., and the scene gradually cleared. Additional photos show North Maine Engine 1 on the scene with two lines deployed, Park Ridge Engine 35 arriving next, and several other units from surrounding areas responding to the growing emergency. Norwood Park’s new Engine 101 was seen parked on Touhy, while Mount Prospect Tower 13 and Glenview Engine 7 were among the units that arrived on the Box Alarm.
