Carpentersville engine in production
Martin Nowak and Ron Wolkoff recently came across 'in production' photos of a new fire engine being constructed by Ferrara for the Carpentersville Fire Department. The images, shared online, offer a glimpse into the early stages of this custom-built unit, giving fans and industry observers a look at what's coming down the line.
This new apparatus is set to be a high-performance rescue pumper, tailored specifically for the needs of the Carpentersville FD. It features a custom Ferrara Ember chassis equipped with a powerful Cummins ISL9 engine, delivering 450 horsepower, paired with an Allison 3000 EVS transmission for smooth operation. The extended medium cab includes a 12-inch raised roof and seating for five crew members, along with an EMS cabinet positioned behind the officer’s seat.
The body is made from heavy-duty extruded aluminum, offering durability and lightweight performance. It includes full-height compartments on both sides, with 15-inch deep upper sections and 28-inch deep lower sections. A Ferrara Ladders-Thru-The-Tank storage module is also included, as well as spare SCBA tanks mounted over the rear wheels.
Under the hood, the engine is equipped with a Hale QMAX 1500 GPM pump, featuring side panel controls, a Fire Research Pump Boss pressure governor, and Hale MIV-E intake valves. The system includes triple speedlays, a right-side LDH discharge, a rear 2½-inch discharge, and deck gun plumbing with TFT Extend-A-Gun and an Akron 3416 monitor.
The unit also has a 1000-gallon poly water tank, ensuring ample water capacity for emergency response. Safety and visibility are enhanced with Whelen LED warning lights, a Whelen LED Traffic Advisor, Federal GH scene lights, and multiple Fire Research Evolution 12V LED lights, including two on the rear body and two on the rear cab wall, plus a brow light.
As the engine moves closer to completion, it's clear that the Carpentersville Fire Department is investing in a state-of-the-art vehicle designed to meet the challenges of modern firefighting. This new unit is expected to serve the community with reliability, efficiency, and advanced technology.
