City of Paris Names Winning Design Team to Reimagine the Eiffel Tower Landscape Using BIM

<

At a special event held today at Paris City Hall, the renowned design firm Gustafson Porter + Bowman has been officially announced as the winner of an international competition to reimagine the Eiffel Tower’s iconic “grand site.” This vast area includes the Trocadéro Gardens, the Champ de Mars, and the Eiffel Tower itself. The announcement was made by Mayor Anne Hidalgo, along with Deputy Mayors Jean-Louis Missika and Jean-François Martins, marking a significant step forward in the city’s ambitious urban renewal plan.

The “grand site” spans 2.4 kilometers of some of Paris’ most cherished landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, the Champ de Mars, and the Trocadero Gardens across the Seine River.

Last year, Autodesk partnered with the City of Paris to develop a detailed 3D model of the entire Eiffel Tower area using building information modeling (BIM). In collaboration with WSP and Gexpertise, they created the largest urban model ever built, covering all aspects of the site — from buildings and roads to green spaces and pedestrian areas. This model was launched in May 2018, alongside the four teams selected to compete in the redesign challenge: Gustafson Porter + Bowman and BIM Services; AL_A and Quatorze-ig; Agence ter and Arcadis; and KOZ Architectes. Over the past year, Autodesk worked closely with each team, providing them access to a simplified version of the 3D model through Autodesk Infraworks. They also hosted workshops to help teams better understand the site's complexities and improve their design processes. This digital approach allowed for more efficient collaboration and clearer visualization of ideas.

“Autodesk is proud to have supported the City of Paris and the four teams throughout this competitive process,” said Nicolas Mangon, VP Business & Marketing AEC at Autodesk. “Using intelligent digital models, immersive 3D tools, and collaborative methods, we helped accelerate decision-making and reduce errors. The jury was able to experience the designs in a virtual environment, getting a real sense of what the future site will look like. We congratulate the city on its commitment to innovation and the winning team for embracing cutting-edge methodologies that reflect the future of architecture and construction.” Today, all four teams unveiled their designs through immersive 3D experiences. This technology allows the city to anticipate fewer errors, improve clarity, and engage the public more effectively. The models were also used by the jury to evaluate proposals in a unified format and experience the changes as if they were future visitors.

The renovation of the Eiffel Tower area is set to be completed in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics, as well as other major events like the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Beyond aesthetics, the project aims to tackle pressing urban challenges such as energy efficiency, sustainability, mobility, logistics, waste management, security, and flood prevention. Now that the winning design has been revealed, the public is invited to provide feedback during a one-month exhibition at the Pavillon de l’Arsenal. The winning team will review the input and make adjustments based on the project’s needs. Once finalized, the design will go through analysis, simulation, and official approvals, with the goal of securing a building permit by early 2020 to begin the revitalization process.
