Box alarm house fire in Prairie View 1-20-14

<

Last night, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods firefighters responded to a house fire on N. Clarice Avenue in unincorporated Lake County, just outside of Buffalo Grove. The call came in around 8:33 PM, and while en route, the dispatch upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 for an active fire. Temperatures were hovering around 12 degrees Fahrenheit, with a steady, wind-driven snowfall that made conditions challenging as the first responders arrived to find flames consuming the entire two-story home. Two residents were seen standing outside, clearly shaken but safe. The husband was quickly transported to a nearby hospital by Lincolnshire emergency personnel, reportedly suffering from smoke inhalation. Unfortunately, the closest fire hydrant was frozen, which complicated water supply efforts. In response, the alarm was escalated to a Box Alarm, allowing mutual aid resources to be dispatched more efficiently. Firefighters worked diligently, setting up Lincolnshire Truck 53 to operate as a master stream, alongside both of their engines, pumping water to combat the intense blaze. As the fire raged, mutual aid support arrived from neighboring departments including Long Grove, Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Palatine, Northfield, and Grayslake. Their assistance was crucial in bringing the situation under control. Neighbors like Sally Miller captured powerful images of the unfolding disaster, providing a stark visual reminder of the destruction caused by the fire. Another photo was taken by Larry Shapiro, who arrived just after the roof collapsed, offering a different perspective of the devastation. The images show the house almost entirely engulfed in flames, with firefighters braving harsh conditions to extinguish the blaze. One particularly striking image captures a firefighter with an ice-encrusted helmet, highlighting the relentless effort required to battle such a severe fire. Additional footage includes a video clip showing the intensity of the flames and the coordinated actions of the firefighting teams. This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and the dedication of our local firefighters. Updates will follow as more details emerge about the cause of the fire and any further developments in the investigation. For now, our thoughts are with the affected family and the brave men and women who risked everything to protect lives and property last night. [Photos courtesy of Sally Miller and Larry Shapiro]
