Box alarm house fire in Prairie View 1-20-14
Last night, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods firefighters responded to a house fire at 20538 N. Clarice Avenue in unincorporated Lake County, which is surrounded by Buffalo Grove. As they were on their way, the call was escalated to a Code 4 due to the intensity of the fire. The temperature had dropped to just 12 degrees Fahrenheit, and heavy, wind-driven snow was falling when the first units arrived. The two-story house was completely engulfed in flames, and its two residents were found outside.
The husband was quickly transported to a nearby hospital by Lincolnshire emergency responders, reportedly suffering from smoke inhalation. Unfortunately, the nearest hydrant was frozen, which complicated firefighting efforts. The alarm was then upgraded to a Box Alarm as additional resources were mobilized. Lincolnshire engines, along with Truck 53, were deployed to pump water and set up master stream operations.
Mutual aid and auto-aid companies soon arrived on the scene, including Long Grove, Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Palatine, Northfield, and Grayslake. Their combined efforts were crucial in containing the blaze and preventing further damage to neighboring properties.
I spoke with a few neighbors who shared photos of the incident. One of them, Sally Miller, captured several images showing the extent of the fire. Another neighbor, Larry Shapiro, arrived shortly after the roof collapsed, and his photos also provide a clear picture of the devastation.
The images below speak volumes about the severity of the situation. The icy conditions made firefighting extremely challenging, with firefighters returning from the scene sporting helmets encrusted with ice. Despite these challenges, the coordinated efforts of all involved managed to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding structures.
[Image captions accompany each photo, describing the scenes and attributing them to either Sally Miller or Larry Shapiro.]
As of now, the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. More details are expected to emerge as authorities continue their probe into this tragic incident. Stay tuned for further updates.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by winter weather to firefighting operations. Our thoughts are with those affected by this fire, and we hope for a swift recovery for the injured homeowner.
