Worker dies in chemical tank in Wheeling – update 2
I just got back from the confined space rescue operation in Wheeling on November 29th, 2012. It was quite an intense scene with multiple agencies involved. Here's a quick rundown of what I saw as it unfolded:
As I arrived at the scene, Decon 1 from MABAS Division 1 was already there, carefully backing into position. The Arlington Heights crew had done a great job setting everything up. You could see the professionalism in how they handled the situation.
Looking around, I noticed Schaumburg Squad 55 and 55A pulling up. They were quickly getting geared up to assist in any way needed. Meanwhile, the firefighters were meticulously setting up the decontamination area. It was clear they were taking every precaution to ensure safety for everyone involved.
The contractor’s truck was parked nearby, and one of the firefighters was inspecting potential anchor points for the recovery ropes. This level of attention to detail is crucial in these types of operations. I could tell they were preparing for the worst while hoping for the best outcome.
As more members of the technical rescue team arrived, you could feel the energy shift. Everyone seemed focused and ready to act. Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk both snapped some incredible photos that really capture the intensity and focus of the moment.
The firefighters suited up, looking ready for action. There was no room for error here; every move counted. The teamwork was evident, and I felt confident knowing these professionals were on the job.
