House fire in Wilmette, 7-30-16
Saturday afternoon brought an unexpected emergency to 1826 Elmwood Avenue in Wilmette when firefighters were called to the scene for a reported house fire. According to Larry Shapiro, who witnessed the event, it all began when police officers arrived first and noticed smoke coming from the building. They promptly upgraded the situation to a Code 4 for an active fire before the fire department's units arrived.
The first engine on the scene confirmed that the residents had safely evacuated the premises. Firefighters quickly ascended to the second floor and discovered that the drapes were ablaze, though the entire house was thick with smoke. Thanks to their swift response, the flames were contained before causing more extensive damage. In an inspiring act of heroism, Winnetka firefighters managed to rescue a distressed cat, providing it with oxygen and ensuring its safe transport to a nearby veterinary clinic.
Unfortunately, one of the elderly residents sustained a minor burn to the hand, and both were transported to Skokie Hospital for further evaluation. The fire was extinguished relatively quickly, and mutual aid companies like those from Winnetka, Glenview, Skokie, Northfield, Evanston, and Glencoe were soon released from the scene.
Among the responding units were Wilmette’s Battalion 26, Tower 26, Engine 27, along with Ambulances 26 and 27. Mutual aid support came from Winnetka Engine 28, Glenview Engine 13, Skokie Squad 18, Northfield Truck 29, Evanston Truck 23, and Glencoe Ambulance 30.
