Chicago Fire Department, 4-11 alarm, Broadway and Gunnison, December 24, 1994

 

I watched this fire from my home on December 24, 1994. It was a large vacant auto dealership, probably around 100 by 200 feet with a bowstring truss roof. As soon as the firefighters arrived, it was clear that there was no chance of saving the building — it was already a total loss. The structure was completely engulfed in flames, and they didn’t attempt any interior attack. The location is now a parking lot for a big strip mall. I took the photos with a cheap camera I could afford at the time, but even with that, the images still capture the intensity of the fire.
