The Chicago Tribune reports that a startling discovery was made at the Lyons Post Office on Saturday morning. A U.S. Postal worker, Mark Thompson, found what appeared to be a half-stick of dynamite, a bullet, and some white powder inside a broken envelope, hidden among a stack of packages and other mail. According to Lyons Fire officials, the suspicious item was discovered around 8:11 a.m. at the post office located at 7836 W. Ogden Ave., in the western suburbs. As a precaution, hazardous materials teams were immediately called in. The entire post office was evacuated while the Cook County Bomb Squad and multiple fire departments arrived on scene to handle the situation. Tim Olk was on site and captured several photos documenting the response.
