A road roller is a mechanical device used to compact materials such as soil, asphalt and concrete. It is mainly composed of a chassis, an engine, a drive system, a road rolling system, a hydraulic system, an electrical system, etc. The main working principle of a road roller is to compact the material through the weight and vibration force of the chassis, thereby increasing the density, strength and stability of the material. According to the type and purpose of the road roller, it can be divided into single steel wheel roller, double steel wheel roller, tire roller, sit-down vibratory roller, hand-push vibratory roller, etc. Road rollers are widely used in the construction of roads, bridges, airports, ports, construction sites and other fields, and are one of the important equipment indispensable for modernization construction. Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 2-4-13
Last night, Chicago firefighters were called to a reported fire at a large warehouse complex located at 4834 S. Halsted. Upon arrival, first responders encountered a five-story, fire-resistive structure measuring 200 by 500 feet, with heavy smoke pouring from the first floor. After a short interior attack, crews pulled back to implement defensive firefighting tactics. The incident was upgraded to a 2-11 alarm, and Engine 81, along with Hose Wagon 6-1-1, was specifically requested.
According to *The Chicago Tribune*, one firefighter was injured during an extra-alarm blaze at an abandoned factory in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, which was being brought under control late Monday evening. The fire began in an L-shaped, concrete construction building west of 48th Street and Halsted Avenue around 5:45 p.m. The injured firefighter was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he remained alert and in stable condition.
The Tribune noted that the factory’s concrete structure made it easier to contain compared to the recent large-scale fire in Bridgeport. Around a dozen fire apparatus were seen on scene, with traffic on Halsted between 47th and 49th streets temporarily blocked off.
Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas described the scene as filled with thick black smoke coming from the warehouse windows. Tower ladders and the Snorkel were deployed, but it was determined that the fire was primarily involving stored contents rather than the building itself. Additional units, including Engine 106 and the Mobile Ventilation Unit (9-2-3), were also called in.
Reporters Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene, but found little visible activity due to the containment efforts. A video and several photos from the incident are available in the full article.
