Lyons hazmat 9-3-11
The Chicago Tribune reported that a U.S. Postal worker at the Lyons Post Office made a startling discovery on Saturday morning. While sorting through mail, Mark Thompson spotted what appeared to be half a stick of dynamite, a bullet, and some white powder hidden among a stack of packages inside a broken envelope.
According to Lyons Fire officials, the suspicious item was found around 8:11 a.m. at the west suburban post office located at 7836 W. Ogden Ave. As a precaution, emergency responders were immediately called in, triggering a hazardous materials response. The post office was quickly evacuated, and the Cook County Bomb Squad, along with multiple fire departments, arrived on the scene to handle the situation.
Tim Olk, a local photographer, was on site and captured several images documenting the incident. The photos show hazmat technicians preparing for entry, conducting briefings, and working carefully to secure the area. One image shows two fully encapsulated hazmat workers exiting the building, while others depict firefighters in protective gear standing by outside the "hot zone." Additional photos highlight the coordinated effort between different emergency units, including a hydrant being used to support operations and a rehab unit arriving to assist the teams.
These images provide a real-time glimpse into how emergency services responded swiftly to a potentially dangerous situation. The full story from the Tribune can be read here, and Tim’s full gallery of photos is available for those interested in seeing more.
