Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 2-4-13
Last night, Chicago firefighters were called to a reported fire at a large warehouse complex located at 4834 S. Halsted. Upon arrival, first responders encountered a five-story, fire-resistive building measuring 200 by 500 feet, with heavy smoke visible from the first floor. After a brief interior attack, crews pulled back to establish a defensive position. The incident was upgraded to a 2-11 alarm, and Engine 81, along with Hose Wagon 6-1-1, was specifically requested.
According to *The Chicago Tribune*, one firefighter suffered minor injuries during the extra-alarm blaze at an abandoned factory in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The fire broke out around 5:45 p.m. in an L-shaped structure west of 48th Street and Halsted Avenue. The injured firefighter was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was reported to be alert and in stable condition.
The building, constructed of concrete, made it easier to contain the fire compared to the recent large-scale blaze in Bridgeport. A dozen fire department units were seen stationed around the vacant warehouse, with Halsted Street between 47th and 49th streets temporarily closed. Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas described the scene as filled with thick black smoke pouring from the windows.
Tower ladders and the Snorkel were positioned in case they were needed, but the fire was later determined to be limited to the contents inside rather than the structure itself. Additional resources, including Engine 106 and the Mobile Ventilation Unit (9-2-3), were also dispatched to the scene.
Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro arrived on location, but the situation had already been largely under control by the time they got there. The *Tribune* article, which includes a video and several photos, can be viewed here.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by firefighters when responding to fires in older, abandoned buildings, especially in densely populated areas. Despite the intensity of the smoke and the initial concerns, crews managed to bring the fire under control without major structural damage. Local residents were advised to keep windows closed and avoid the area until further notice.
Construction machinery refers to mechanical equipment used in construction projects, including various lifting machinery, excavators, concrete mixers, loaders, rollers, steel processing machinery, etc. These mechanical equipment can improve construction efficiency, reduce labor costs, and improve project quality and safety. Construction machinery is widely used in construction projects in various fields such as roads, bridges, tunnels, houses, and water conservancy, and is an indispensable and important tool for construction projects. With the continuous advancement of science and technology, the performance and functions of construction machinery are also constantly improving, bringing more convenience and benefits to construction projects.
