LG plans to develop quantum dot TV

LG Electronics, an expensive organic light-emitting display (OLED) TV maker, said it will use a dual-track strategy for cheaper quantum dots and OLED display technology for next-generation televisions. South Korea’s LG Electronics has been promoting its OLED TV as a next-generation subsidiary, LG Display Co., Ltd. LG Chief Financial Officer told analysts on Wednesday: "We are implementing a dual-track strategy, quantum dots and OLED." Speculation LG and Samsung will launch quantum dot TVs, Dow Chemical Co., Ltd. said it expects to be in the first half of 2015. South Korea established a new quantum dot commercial production plant.
LG previously reported a profit of 461 billion won for the July-September quarter, which exceeded the expected 454 billion won for 36 analysts. LG claims various benefits of OLED TVs, such as displaying higher quality images than existing LCD screens. However, the 65-inch OLED TV launched by LG earlier this year was sold for 12 million won, far more than the price of LCD TVs. Quantum dot display televisions offer a cheaper alternative to OLED TVs and are easier to manufacture. Analysts believe that LG cannot be left behind as more and more competitors may use the technology.
